Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

The holidays are here and along with them comes lots of goodies, parties, time constraints and overall indulging. To keep from gaining weight while still enjoying the feasts and festivities, keep your workouts on track. While it may take a little creativity, you can indulge and enjoy guilt free. Try the following tips to keep the extra calories from adding up.

Go Ahead and Splurge

It’s too hard to pass up the hearty meals and holiday goodies, so don’t. Instead, allow yourself a small portion of the things you really want and don’t allow yourself to feel guilty about it later.

Schedule Your Workouts

Plan your workouts for the week ahead. Write them in on your calendar so you’ll be more likely to do them. Have a plan B ready for days that are extra busy.

Exercise First Thing in the Morning

Devote the first 20 to 30 minutes of your day to exercise. Not only will you have fewer interruptions early in the morning, but early morning exercise helps fight food cravings throughout the day.

You’ve Got To Move It

No time for long gym workouts or Pilates? Just keep moving. Stand up and stretch regularly at work. Stand or move around for at least one minute every hour. Research shows that walking just over a mile a day, or three to four minute bouts of exercise per week, may be enough to maintain weight and your fitness level through the season.

Track Your Food & Activity

Spend a few minutes each day writing down what you’re eating. Splurges here and there are okay, but be careful that you aren’t overeating. Track your activity, too. Even if your holiday commitments are keeping you away from the gym, write down whatever activity you’re able to squeeze in. It all counts.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Drinking a large glass of water before each meal will leave you feeling full and help prevent overindulging. Plus, your brain often mistakes thirst with hunger, which can lead to overeating.

Eat a Healthy Snack Before Arriving

Whether it’s an office party or gathering of friends and family, by eating a healthy snack 30 minutes before arriving, you won’t be as tempted to dive into the food spread. Additionally, a power-packed, healthy snack will give you the energy to take on the festivities with gusto.
